Melt my heart

Mother's Day 2009 I was 9 months pregnant and two days away from Ethan's birth day. I was eagerly awaiting Ethan's arrival while enjoying our final days as a family of three.

This year I am celebrating being a mother of two amazingly smart, happy, adorable boys that make my heart melt every day.

See what I mean?

And of course none of this would be possible without my mom and best friend.

I have a lot to celebrate!

Gift Ideas for Mom {or yourself!}

Wondering what to get Mom for Mother's Day?

Need some ideas to pass along for your loved ones for what to get YOU??

Let's go shopping on Etsy!

First stop: Teri's Treasure. I ordered this fabric bin made out of my favorite "Happy All Over" fabric and it's perfect for holding my crafty goodies! The quality is EXCELLENT.

I adore her quilted table toppers & coasters. These tea-themed ones are so sweet.

These re-usable fabric labels are so cool!!

How about an eco-friendly cleaning mitt?? Cute AND practical!

She's got a slew of other nifty stuff, too--check her out!!

Next up: Crafty Addictions where you can get amazing personalized birthstone pendants for a GREAT price!! I love the "est." option! I ordered these for my mom with "Nana" (to the power of three) and mother-in-law with "Grandma" (to the power of five). They're sure to be a hit!

She's got lots of other neat personalize-able jewelry, too--don't miss it!

And #3: Moja Creations! This is where I shopped for my mom last year and she's still getting compliments!! If your mom takes her lunch to work or school like mine does, and/or carries snacks in her purse, these are a great alternative to throw-away plastic or paper bags! I got my mom one large and one small, in coordinating colors. Any mom will love these reusable lunch/snack bags.

Moving on to Nicole at Owl Naturals. She's new to Etsy and among the very FEW {I've checked} who use REAL natural ingredients in her products and doesn't use "fragrance oil." Her
soaps are delightful AND she wraps them in pages from vintage children's books!

I'm eyeing the mini bar soap sampler (just $4.50) to give to my favorite mom-friends.

She also offers beeswax candles from her local bee-keeper, which I adore! I can't tolerate scented candles while I eat so these are perfect.

We also have Distressed Designs for custom signs. Any mom would love to have this with her family name.

As a mother of two sons, this one is especially delightful!

Lastly is J Lynn Creations, which has oodles of hand-stamped jewelry and these nifty stamped spoons/garden stakes.

It would be precious if you gave it in a potted plant.

I hope you enjoyed this little "shop tour" and have fun checking out these lovely ladies' wares! Tell them I sent ya!

Redemption Baby

Easter is the perfect time, I think, to tell this story.

We call our youngest son, Ethan, our "Redemption Baby."

Here's why.

Our pastor has been preaching this year out of the book of Genesis. Two recent phrases really stuck out to me:

"God's greatest work isn't creation. God's greatest work is redemption."

"Jesus didn't come to make bad people good, He came to make dead people ALIVE."

Death to life. That's redemption. That's Easter. That's our Ethan.

I was born with a mother's heart. I always wanted to be a mommy. I was one of those girls who hauled a baby doll and diaper bag, along with my Bible, to church on Sundays and who took a stroller with a doll to the mall. I bathed my dolls, rocked them to sleep, held them endlessly and loved them like they were real.

I was also one of those kids who were "raised in a Christian home." If it's possible to be saved because of your parents' relationship with Jesus, I would have surely qualified! But I made the decision to repent of my sins and ask Jesus into my heart at the age of 8. I remember feeling an immense feeling of peace that night.

My salvation story was not dramatic. I wasn't at rock bottom when I turned to God. I was just a kid who wanted to follow Christ.

Fast forward to March 2005. My husband, Drew, and I had been married for over two years and thought it was time to start a family. I was doing Fertility Awareness and it took about four "official tries" before we got a positive pregnancy test. We were thrilled!!

My pregnancy was a breeze and we planned to have a home birth with a midwife. I dreamed of being handed our baby, Drew announcing whether it was a boy or a girl and celebrating as a family in our own home, without any interference or interruptions.

On November 26, 2005, I labored for 18 hours at home but due to complications during the pushing phase, I had to be transported to the nearest hospital to deliver our son. His delivery was fast and furious and I don't even remember who said he was a boy. Andrew was 8 lbs. 4 oz. and 21" long.

He was taken from me immediately to be assessed and because of damage I incurred during the process, I had to have a spinal shot and go into surgery. I didn't get to hold Andrew until an hour after he was born. All of my dreams about his birth (aside from it being un-medicated) were lost. He was, by the way, perfectly healthy, born at 40 weeks and 6 days gestation and was 8 lbs. 4 oz. and 21" long.

I wanted my second birth to be different. We started trying to get pregnant when Andrew was about three years old and got pregnant on the first try. I was due on December 26, 2008 and eagerly told everyone our news and filled in my pregnancy journal.

It was right before Mother's Day and I was just 5 weeks along when I started bleeding. I attended church on Mother's Day, knowing my pregnancy was over, but with peace, knowing God was with me. On May 13th, before leaving home for work, I miscarried. I was actually very relieved.

We gave my body a few months to recover, then my husband was eager to start trying again. We told our friends, family and church family to start praying, even before we conceived. I was stunned when we, again, got pregnant on the first try. I was thrilled to discover that I was due on May 13th, the very day I'd miscarried the year before. I felt like God was at work, trying to somehow "make up for" the pregnancy we lost.

My pregnancy was, again, complication-free. I did have some hormonal issues and anxiety, but the baby and I checked out perfectly at every appointment. I had decreased appetite so I had only gained 12lbs when I went into labor.

I was at 40 weeks and five days when I went into labor at about 8pm on May 11th. I tried to sleep but finally woke my husband up at about 3am, wondering if "this was it." I worked through my contractions and by 5am, my husband insisted that we go to the hospital. I was checked in at 6am and was already at 7cm dilation, hooray! My contractions were shockingly mild and I felt excited and happy--a far cry from the hours of agony I spent in the bathtub during my first labor.

My doctor was called and said she'd get a quick cup of coffee and I'd be ready to go--she was right. I was ready to start pushing at 8am and Ethan was born at 8:12am. He weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz and was 22" long and perfectly healthy. Everyone was amazed at how "easy" my birth was. Thank you, Lord!! As soon as he came out, I was thanking my doctor and we were both thanking God!

The nurses handed him to me immediately and we waited for the cord to stop pulsing before cutting it. It was love at first sight and I was able to hold and admire him for an hour before they took him aside to clean him up. I finally got the birth experience I wanted.

We named him Ethan, which means "strong." Ethan would have been my name, had I been a boy! He came home from the hospital on May 13th, the same day I'd miscarried the year before. That day will always be a happy day in my memory now. God redeemed that day, the baby we lost, and my first birth experience. God's greatest work is redemption and I am so grateful to have seen it played out in my own life. What a mighty God we serve!

Ethan lives up to his name. He is this exceptionally sweet, happy, adorable baby. Even strangers comment on what an angel he is. He is also very strong and healthy, has hit all of his milestones early and is into everything! He is a tremendous blessing to everyone who knows him and we can't imagine our lives without him.

Since I gained so little weight during my pregnancy, I was at my pre-pregnancy weight by the time I got home from the hospital and within a month, my weight was lower than it had been in over five years. It was just a "happy side effect" of feeling yucky during my pregnancy--but it sure helped when it came to losing the baby weight!

Show 'n Tell: Fabric Flowers

I've been having a blast experimenting with several versions of fabric flowers.

They're so versatile!

Use them:
As a brooch to jazz up a suit, sweater, jacket or jeans and a T-shirt
On a choker or bracelet
To attach to a purse, tote bag or evening bag
As a headband
As a hair clip
To adorn a gift

You'd like to get some tips and links?? So glad you asked!

Fabric Flower #1:

This one requires a tiny amount of simple sewing. I love the fluttery effect! You can mix fabrics, too. It requires cutting out two big flowers and four little ones, arranging them and stitching them together, then attaching a button in the middle to cover your stitches.

This tutorial was from
Wise Crafts

I whipped this up from fabric I had sitting around and, for a first attempt, it turned out well!

I thought it'd be cute in pink and white polka dots. Yes ma'am, it is!

Here it is, using six different Amy Butler fabrics. I like this effect, too!

You can have a lot of fun combining different fabrics! I'd like to try linen for the bottom two layers and a thin, filmy cotton for the top.

The green and white polka dotted version will be perfect for St. Patrick's Day--and it kinda looks like clovers!

TIPS:

1. Folding the top four flowers just slightly less than perfectly in half gives the fiished product a little more visual "texture."
2. Make sure all layers are secure before attaching the button.
3. Ball it up in your hand and scruntch it really well to give it a more "ruffled" look.
4. You could add more layers to the top, under the button, like a felt flower or even ribbon.
5. Check out the Flickr group she links to see more examples.

Fabric Flower #2:

This one requires more sewing, but it's equally simple. Here, you cut a strip of fabric (great for any long pieces of scrap fabric you may have laying around), make a running stitch along the whole thing then pull it like a drawstring, stitch it together and attach a button. It's a very cute look!!

She's calling it a "Frayed Flower."

The tutorial comes from
Maize in Montana

I only made one and it was only about 30" long instead of the 40" she recommends. I got impatient! :) I used my polka dot fabric for practice!

TIPS:

1. My only tip is to go with the 40" she recommands for a fuller flower.

Fabric Flower #3:

I call it the "Ragamuffin Flower." The tutorial comes from

Nest Decorating

I've had fun with these and have attached them to customizable cards for my shop. I'd be delighted to receive one of these!

TIPS:

1. My best tip is to hold it the way she's showing in the picture when you cut it, or you end up with a pile of scraps. Your fingers should be holding what will be the center of the flower.
2. Practice on paper or "junk fabric" first.
3. You do have to cut it almost all the way around, in an oval. Unfold it once and check the depth of the petals before unfolding all the way, so you can correct your cutting if necessary.

Fabric Flower #4:

This one is the "Blooming DeVille." The best part is that you get to use synthetic fabrics and BURN THE EDGES to seal and curl them. It's fantastic. If you've ever drooled over all the fabrics in the "special occasion" section of the fabric store, you'll enjoy this one!

I purchased the tutorial from Etsy. Here's the link to the listing.

This is the first one I made and listed in my Etsy shop. It has about 30 layers so it took a while and made my hand hurt!

I think it's super-funky on a denim jacket.

So I started experimenting with fewer layers and different fabrics. I looooooove this combination of silver/pink/black!

This peachy one would be perfect for a garden party or wedding. You can see the scorch marks...I like it!

I found this polka dot material {and the navy blue satin} on clearance at Wal-Mart. I think it's a hoot!

This one is also in my Etsy shop

This funky fabric was on clearance, too. I wanna call it something like "Nightlife." The colors remind me of neon signs in the city.

TIPS:

1. Every fabric burns differently so have fun trying different ones. The only ones I've found not to work are chiffon and lame. They just go up in flames!
2. Keep trying the layers in different configurations until you get the look you want. They don't have to be perfectly centered.
3. Use differnt textures like tulle and sequined fabrics for an interesting effect.

And just for fun, here's Ethan at 8.5 months in the throes of teething, modeling a flower as it would look if I made it into a headband!

Let me know if you end up trying any of these--and I'd love to see the results!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

I hope you all enjoyed your Mother's Day, being honored yourselves and honoring the mothers in your life.
We had a very enjoyable day today!
My parents attended church with us and my hubby and I got to attend a service together--a rare treat because one or the both of us are usually serving. A dear couple took our place in the two-year-olds class--what a blessing.
Why is there a picture of me with my car? Because for Mother's Day, my husband treated me (or my car, actually) to a much-needed wash, detailing, transmission flush and oil change. My main love language is "acts of service," so this one hit the mark! MUCH appreciated!! He got me a lovely card, too, that made me cry. Even better, he got a card for my mom from our son and even had him "sign it" (scribble inside) and surprised us both. He is soooo thoughtful. He also got me a "Princess" tag for my car! See it in the back window?? That's my dad and our home in the background--a rare glimpse!

My parents went to a dinner in a local orchard last night and brought me back this basket o' peaches, right off the trees! They also got me this adorable over-sized tea cup and saucer/planter with fresh basil. YUM! I'll try to keep it alive long enough to EAT it!

After church, my mom and I ran to the grocery store (OK, mosied) and got fixin's for lunch--sandwiches, cole slaw, pasta salad and "junky" dip and chips. And root beer, yum! Plus THIS CAKE with the butterfly on top. Mmmm.

I got my mom this beautiful card from my buddy at Lemon Tree Studio on Etsy--all the ladies in my family got different variations of this one. She loved it.

She also got this flip flop bag from Baffin Bags, another Etsy friend! Loved that, too!! She was going to use it as an occasional tote bag but liked it so much that she's using it as a purse!

And this will be the test of who actually gets to the end of these long posts...
it was a bittersweet day today, too, because I'm having complications with my pregnancy and will be going to the doctor tomorrow. We're praying for a miracle but only God knows at this point. Will keep you posted.
Hope you had a great day, too!!

Mother's Day

...is just over a month away!! What are YOU getting your mom??
When it comes to birthdays and Mother's Day, I like buying things that the recipient wouldn't buy for herself. Something frivolous, pretty and maybe a little impractical!
I love what "headtotoe2007" has on Etsy. Gift baskets!! The contents are handmade and the basket is reusable.
Here's her site:
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5250233
Here's what my grandmother in Florida is getting from my Mom and me. "Headtotoe" is shipping it to her directly--how easy is that??? Besides the beautiful basket and liner, it includes a pillow case for the travel pillow she uses with her favorite chair (the larger one is pictured, but I wanted you to see the print called "peony"), hand soap and a reversible tissue box cover WITH tissues.

In a word? Delightful. No, she doesn't NEED a pink tissue box cover or a fancy pillow case for her pillow--but won't she LOVE it?? What a treat, right?? I think she'll adore it.
There's also THIS basket available with kitchen items. How cute is this stuff??? It includes the basket the liner, the reversible tissue box cover, a kitchen towel and a pot holder. I love the polka dots!!

The BEST part?? You can purchase it and have it shipped--all for under $40. Go in on it with a family member!!
This one's for my mom. She had to OK it because I had such a hard time choosing between all the gorgeous totes from "baffinbags" on Etsy.
She's at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5119794
It's flip flops--perfect for my mom--with the matching mini-wallet. Her bags are amazing, with all these pockets on the inside. The quality is fantastic.

As for my mother-in-law in another state, she's getting this mini-wallet and tissue cover in the "pink acanthus floral" fabric. Depending on my budget, I'd like to slip a gift card into the wallet as an extra treat. Somewhere she CAN'T buy something for her kids!! These are from "Sew Gracious" on Etsy and she has a lovely assortment of affordable items, many with free shipping!! She's at

For fabulous, CUSTOM cards--check out "Lemon Tree Studio" at
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5622688
I ordered ALL my Mother's Day cards from her--and she can make them say anything you want!! Here's two examples:

I've purchased multiple times from all these ladies and they are wonderful. Hop on over and check them out!! Just tell them "Proudgrits11" sent ya! :)
